Richard W. Hoffmann ("Rick")

Rick has been the lead counsel in more than forty-five intellectual property litigation matters, and has argued nine cases in front of Federal Courts of Appeals. Rick helped lead the co-counsel team in the United States Supreme Court case of TrafFix Devices, Inc. v. Marketing Displays, Inc. In preparation for this case, working closely with now Chief Justice of the United States, John G. Roberts. This case was decided in 2001 with a unanimous decision in favor or our client. During 2006, Rick and Cary Brooks co-authored a friend-of-the-court brief submitted to the United States Supreme Court in support of the obviousness test. Rick has been named a Michigan Super Lawyer for the years 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 for intellectual property litigation, and a Top Lawyer by DB magazine. Rick also received an AV® rating from Martindale-Hubbell.*

In addition to his litigation experience, Rick has substantial experience in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the mechanical and chemical arts as well as the preparation and prosecution of trademark applications.

Rick received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (with honor) from Michigan Technological University, where he was President of Phi Lambda Upsilon national honorary chemical society and a member of the Tau Beta Pi national honorary engineering society. Rick graduated from The Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State University College of Law),Magna Cum Laude. Rick served on the Law Review as Note and Comment Editor and was the author of: "What Constitutes Printed Publication Under the Patent Act," published in the 1989 Detroit College of Law Review. Rick has also served as president of the Saginaw Valley Patent Law Association, and as a council member to the Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Rick is admitted to practice before Michigan, Federal and State Courts, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Federal and Sixth Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court.
