Steven B. Walmsley

Steve Walmsley is a shareholder of our firm whose practice encompasses intellectual property litigation, counseling, and procurement. More specifically, he has experience with patent, trade dress, and trade secret litigation, and he renders opinions on validity and infringement of patents and trademarks. He also renders opinions on patentability of inventions and registrability of trademarks, drafts confidentiality and license agreements, and prepares and prosecutes trademark and patent applications.

Steve has expertise with mechanical and electrical devices, software, and business methods. He has prepared or prosecuted a wide variety of patents on the following technologies: machine vision and image processing, wireless computing systems, powertrain controls and hardware, fuel systems, injection molding processes, welding methods, engine ignition systems, medical packaging, hotel architecture, climate control systems, digital cameras, inkjet printers, electro-hydraulic engine controls, adjustable pedals, stamping and forging dies, tooling, chassis positioning systems, refrigeration systems, vehicle trim and lighting, microscopy, and medical devices.

Before joining our firm, Steve apprenticed for a veteran patent attorney while attending law school, and worked as an associate for the D.C. firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering after graduation. Before that, he was an engineer with Ford Motor Company's transmission and powertrain divisions for several years.

Steve graduated from the Wayne State University Law School, and from Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute, B.S.M.S.E., Tau Beta Pi). He is an associate member of the Virginia bar, and an active member of the bars of the District of Columbia, the State of Michigan, the State of Texas, and the United States Patent & Trademark Office. He is also a member of the United States District Court, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association.

Steve's publications include an article published in the University of Michigan Telecommunications and Technology Law Review, entitled "BEST MODE: A Plea to Repair or Sacrifice This Broken Requirement of United States Patent Law."
