Celebrating 145 Years in 2010! No Michigan Firm Has Done It Longer

Founded as an intellectual property law firm in Detroit in 1865 by a returning Civil War Colonel, Reising Ethington will celebrate 145 years of serving creative people during 2010. The firm has served some of the oldest and best known names in invention, and has continuously provided strong support for legal education - dating back to 1891 when Reising attorneys helped found the Detroit College of Law.

West Publishing Asks Reising Attorneys to Write Another Patent Law Book

Reising attorneys Bill Francis, Jim Stevens, and Matt Schmidt have been asked by the West Publishing company to co-author the Seventh Edition of the textbook Patent Law Including Trade Secrets, Copyrights & Trademarks. These Reising attorneys co-authored the Sixth Edition of this text book, and a corresponding teacher's guide, that is currently used in law schools across the U.S.A.

Cary Brooks Teaches CLE Sessions

Reising attorney Cary Brooks has trained dozens of patent attorneys in advanced patent prosecution skills. Cary was an instructor for four years with the Patent Resources Group in this area. Now he trains interns and associates at Reising, and leads regular CLE sessions for all the attorneys. Cary has written several articles on a variety of IP topics, and has made numerous presentations to public and corporate audiences on advanced patent prosecution techniques and patent design-around strategies. Cary makes CLE presentations at the request of our clients.

Jim Stevens to Teach at UDM School of Law

Reising attorney Jim Stevens has been asked back to teach Patent Law at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Stevens is teaching Patent Law for the fifth consecutive year with a course that focuses on fundamental principles of US and international patent law, including development of claim drafting and legal writing skills.

A White House policy paper issued on September 20, 2009 focuses on two aspects of intellectual property and patent law divided between a need for strong international enforcement and a call for reform of the US system:

1. Enforce our trade agreements to ensure access for American products abroad...

2. Protect intellectual property rights. Intellectual property is to the digital age what physical goods were to the industrial age...

Nanotechnology

In the rapidly expanding field of nanotechnology, Reising attorney Steven Walmsley recently helped a client procure a favorable patent that covers methods of controlling probe positioning for a scanning probe microscope. This patent was issued with many solid claims that were allowed as originally filed. (U.S. Patent 7,569,077)

Congratulations!

Reising attorney Corey Beaubien passed the Patent Office bar exam and is now a registered patent attorney. Reising attorney Mike Druzinski passed the Michigan Bar Exam with a multi-state bar score that is in the top 1-2 percent of all scores.

Reising Adds Foreign Filing Clerk

To help maintain high-quality international service while the firm grows, Reising Ethington has added a Foreign Filing Clerk staff position; and Theresia Blasciuc has filled this position. Blasciuc has ten years of experience in PCT and direct country application filings.
